1998 Bavarian state election
On September 13, 1998, Bavaria elected the 204 members of the Landtag (state parliament). The Christian Social Union (CSU), led by Edmund Stoiber, won a clear majority again, gaining three seats to finish with 123 seats and about 52.9% of the vote. The Social Democrats (SPD), led by Renate Schmidt, won 67 seats with about 28.7% of the vote, down three seats. The Greens, led by Jerzy Montag, kept 14 seats with around 5.7% of the vote. The Free Voters of Bavaria gathered about 3.7% of the vote but won no seats. Turnout was 69.8% (about 12.19 million voters), roughly 2 percentage points higher than in the previous election. The CSU maintained its majority in the Landtag, and Edmund Stoiber continued as Minister-President.
