2022 Haringey London Borough Council election
The 2022 Haringey London Borough Council election was held on 5 May 2022. All 57 council seats were up for election, with new ward boundaries in place but the same total number of councillors. Councils in London use a multi-member first-past-the-post system, so voters in each ward could cast as many votes as there were seats.
Turnout was 31.8%.
Labour retained control of the council, winning 50 seats, up from 42 in 2018 (an increase of 8). The Liberal Democrats won 7 seats, down from 15 in 2018 (a loss of 8). The Green Party and the Conservatives did not win any seats, though they did stand in some wards.
Labour’s Peray Ahmet served as council leader after taking the role in May 2021 following a leadership challenge within the party. The 2022 election followed a period of internal debates within Labour, including controversies over leadership and property decisions at the council.
Background and context: Haringey has been under Labour control for most of its history since 2002, with a brief Conservative period from 1968 to 1971. The 2018 result saw Labour with 42 seats and the Lib Dems with 15, while the Greens and Conservatives received votes but no seats.
What this means for residents: The elected councillors will decide local issues such as housing, education, planning, waste, and transport. Labour highlighted plans for more low-traffic neighbourhoods, additional electric vehicle charging points, and more council homes; the Lib Dems focused on environmental initiatives and opposition to certain development plans.
Note: Several by-elections have occurred in the years following the 2022 election due to resignations and other events.
