2015 Country Liberal Party leadership spill
A leadership spill rocked the Northern Territory’s Country Liberal Party in early February 2015. On 2 February, Willem Westra van Holthe announced in a late-night press conference that the CLP had elected him as its new leader, potentially becoming Chief Minister and replacing Adam Giles. He said the party-room vote was 9–5 in his favour and that the vote had been conducted by phone. Giles refused to resign, and the Administrator of the Northern Territory, John Hardy, declined to sack him, citing irregularities in the spill and questions about whether Westra van Holthe could command the Assembly.
With the party room divided and concerns about governing without a clear majority, pressure from the CLP’s organisational wing grew. On 3 February, after talks within the party, an agreement was reached: Giles would remain as leader and Westra van Holthe would become his deputy. Westra van Holthe ruled out another leadership challenge.
Adam Giles had become Chief Minister in March 2013 after a party coup, but his tenure was troubled by defections, resignations, and scandals. After the deal, Giles reshuffled the cabinet, dismissing Health Minister Robyn Lambley, and on 10 February appointed a new lineup that included former Treasurer Dave Tollner back in cabinet.
The spill highlighted the CLP’s unstable leadership. A year later, the party was swept from office in the Territory’s worst-ever defeat for an incumbent government, with both Giles and Westra van Holthe losing their seats.
