Vidyasagar University
Vidyasagar University is a public state research university in Midnapore, West Bengal, India. It was established on 29 September 1981 by the Vidyasagar University Act to commemorate Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, a 19th‑century education reformer. The founder was Anil Kumar Gain, a Cambridge mathematician and statistician.
The university is mainly an affiliating institution, with about 46 colleges in Purba Medinipur and Paschim Medinipur under its jurisdiction. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses across arts and sciences, including 27 postgraduate departments and an MBA in the Commerce with Farm Management department. The campus covers about 138.8 acres, and the endowment is around ₹77.55 crore.
Key recognitions include UGC recognition under Section 12B in 1990 and NAAC accreditation with a B grade (CPGA 2.86). The Vice-Chancellor is Dipak Kumar Kar and the Chancellor is the Governor of West Bengal. Vidyasagar University runs a Directorate of Distance Education since 1994 for distance learning, with Personal Contact Programmes, and these courses are approved by UGC and the Distance Education Council. The university also has a campus computer centre, publishes journals, and supports sports. An alumni association was established in 2000.
