2012 Orlando mayoral election
On April 3, 2012, Orlando voters chose a mayor in a nonpartisan election. Incumbent Buddy Dyer ran for a third full term and faced three challengers: City Councilman Phil Diamond, businessman Ken Mulvaney, and political organizer Mike Cantone. Mulvaney, who had challenged Dyer before, labeled him a “career politician,” while Diamond argued Dyer neglected neighborhoods and funneled resources to downtown projects for friends. The Orlando Sentinel endorsed Dyer, praising his blend of experience and vision. Dyer won re-election, taking about 50.96% of the vote to Diamond’s 27.43% and Mulvaney’s 11.13%, with Cantone receiving the remaining share, avoiding a runoff.
