Melbourne Victory’s 2009–10 season was managed by Ernie Merrick. In the A-League, they finished 2nd in the regular season and lost the Grand Final to Sydney FC on penalties (4–2). In the 2010 AFC Champions League, Victory were placed in Group E with Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, Beijing Guoan and Kawasaki Frontale and finished bottom of the group.

Top scorer: Carlos Hernández with 13 goals. Attendance: highest home crowd 30,668 vs Sydney FC (9 October 2009); lowest 15,168 vs Newcastle Jets (3 September 2009); average home league attendance was about 20,750.

Sponsorship and kit: IntraLot became the new main sponsor, replacing Samsung, and their logo appeared on the front of the shirt.

Off-season changes and new signings: Several players left, including Steve Pantelidis, Michael Thwaite (to Gold Coast United), Sebastian Ryall (to Sydney FC), Michael Theoklitos (left the club), José López Ramírez’s loan ended, and Daniel Allsopp moved to Al Rayyan. New signings included Glen Moss (goalkeeper), Surat Sukha (midfielder), Mathew Theodore and Matthew Foschini (promoted from the youth squad), and the permanent signing of Carlos Hernández from L.D. Alajuelense. Other new players were Mate Dugandžić (from Melbourne Knights), Robbie Kruse (from Brisbane Roar), Marvin Angulo (from Club Sport Herediano) and Sutee Suksomkit as a nine-match guest player. Ney Fabiano left to join Bangkok Glass FC in December 2009.
