1967 Piccadilly World Match Play Championship
1967 Piccadilly World Match Play Championship
The fourth World Match Play Championship was held from 12–14 October 1967 at Wentworth, on the West Course in Virginia Water, Surrey, England. Eight players competed in a knockout event, with each match played over 36 holes. The total prize fund was £16,000, with the winner receiving £5,000.
Winner and final: Arnold Palmer won the title for the second time, defeating Peter Thomson 1 up in the final.
Notable matches:
- Gary Player, the two-time defending champion, was defeated in the opening round by Gay Brewer after a long match that went to the 39th hole.
- Peter Thomson reached the final by beating Gary Player in the semi-final.
- In the other semi-final, Arnold Palmer won to set up the final with Thomson.
Before the main event, the Piccadilly Tournament (a 72-hole stroke play event) was played on the East Course on 10–11 October. Peter Butler won that event and £750.
There were talks of a boycott because no British golfers were in the main event, but the PGA issued a statement and the boycott did not take place.
Prize distribution (out of £16,000): winner £5,000, runner-up £3,000, losing semi-finalists £2,000, first-round losers £1,000.
