Arturo Bastes
The Most Reverend Arturo Mandin Bastes, SVD, D.D. (April 1, 1944 – October 20, 2024) was a Filipino Catholic bishop who led the Diocese of Sorsogon from 2003 to 2019. He was born in Loboc, Bohol, and was ordained a priest of the Society of the Divine Word on November 28, 1970, by Pope Paul VI.
He was named Bishop of Romblon by Pope John Paul II on July 3, 1997 and was consecrated as a bishop on August 21, 1997 in Cebu City. He was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Sorsogon on July 25, 2002 and became Bishop of Sorsogon on April 17, 2003. He retired on October 15, 2019, and his successor was Jose Alan Dialogo.
In 2008, he served as chairman and president of the Philippine Bible Society. In 2016, he led a campaign to allocate 20% of government resources to an anti-poverty fund, according to the CBCP. His episcopal motto was "Gressus Meos Diriget" (“He will guide my steps”).
He died on October 20, 2024, in Cainta, Rizal, at age 80.
