1949 SMU Mustangs football team

The 1949 SMU Mustangs football team represented Southern Methodist University in the Southwest Conference during the 1949 college football season. Led by 12th-year head coach Matty Bell, the Mustangs finished 5–4–1 overall and 2–3–1 in the SWC, outscoring opponents 215 to 204. They started 5–1–1 and reached No. 10 in the AP poll, but lost their last three games and finished unranked. Home games were played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. Captains were Dick McKissack, Bobby Folsom, and Doak Walker. Doak Walker and Kyle Rote were named to the All-SWC team by both the AP and UP.
