Yuri Yakubov
Yury Nikolayevich Yakubov, born 29 August 1946 in Velikiye Luki, is a retired Soviet and Russian army general. He came from a military family and joined the Soviet Army in 1963, training as a tank officer. He held a series of commands in Ukraine and East Germany, earning rapid promotions and becoming a major general after his service in East Germany. In 1990 he graduated from the Military Academy of the General Staff. He later served in the Far Eastern Military District, becoming deputy commander in 1994 and then commander in 1999. He was promoted to Army General in 2003 and retired from active duty in 2006.
After retirement, Yakubov stayed active in public service, working with the Ministry of Defence and the Office of Inspectors General. He lives in Moscow with his wife and two sons and maintains strong ties to Velikiye Luki.
