You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me is the English version of the 1965 Italian song Io che non vivo (senza te), which means “I, Who Can’t Live (Without You).” The Italian song was written by Pino Donaggio and Vito Pallavicini. The English lyrics were written for Dusty Springfield by Vicki Wickham and Simon Napier-Bell.

Dusty Springfield recorded the English version in March 1966 at Philips Studio in London. It was released as a single on 25 March 1966. In the UK, the B-side was “Every Ounce of Strength”; in the US, it was “Little by Little.” The song became Dusty’s biggest hit, reaching number one in the UK and number four on the US Billboard Hot 100.

The Italian song had gained fame after being performed at the Sanremo Festival and later appeared in the film Sandra. Dusty was inspired by the melody and, after many takes, recorded the English version.

Elvis Presley later recorded a cover for his 1970 album That’s the Way It Is, released as a single on 6 October 1970. Presley’s version reached number 11 on the US Hot 100 and topped the Easy Listening chart, among other chart successes worldwide.

The song remains a defining hit for Dusty Springfield and has been covered by many artists.
