List of volcanoes in Montserrat
Volcanoes of Montserrat
Montserrat has one active volcano and several older, inactive ones.
Active:
- Soufrière Hills Volcano — This volcano in the southern part of the island began erupting in 1995. Eruptions produced lava, ash clouds, and lava flows that destroyed the capital, Plymouth, and changed the island’s landscape. It is continuously monitored by the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, which issues alerts as needed.
Inactive or extinct:
- Montserrat also has older volcanic centers that are no longer erupting. These are not currently active but are part of the island’s volcanic history.
