Women (Foreigner song)
“Women” is the fourth single from Foreigner’s third album, Head Games. Written by Mick Jones, it was released in February 1980 in the U.S. and on April 25, 1980 in the U.K. The song runs 3:25 and its B-side is “The Modern Day,” also sung by Jones.
Critical reception was mixed. Billboard praised the strong vocals and hot guitar licks but criticized the lyrics as misogynistic. Cash Box highlighted the slashing guitars and hard boogie beat driven by Lou Gramm’s rough vocals. Record World said the track rocks hard with buzz-saw guitar and steamy vocals. Rolling Stone’s David Fricke called it a tongue-in-cheek misogynous chant powered by Jones’s riffing, without pompous metal flourishes. Some critics saw it as a bluesy departure for the band.
A music video, created before MTV popularized the format, features models acting out various female stereotypes. Some reviews called the lyrics chauvinistic or dumb, while others found the song interesting and catchy in structure. Gramm defended the lyrics as tongue-in-cheek, arguing the song uses stereotypes in a playful way. Jones also described the song as fun.
“Women” reached No. 41 on the Billboard Hot 100.
