List of Members of the Order of Merit (short version)

The Order of Merit (OM) was created in 1902 by King Edward VII to honor people who have made exceptional contributions in science, art, literature, and public life. The order is small by design; only a limited number of living members is allowed at any time (traditionally 24).

New OM appointments are made by the monarch on the advice of the Prime Minister. Members are not ranked above one another, and there are no hereditary titles.

This page lists everyone who has ever been made a Member of the Order of Merit since 1902. The number next to each name shows their place in the overall sequence of OM appointments since the order’s inception.
