Wolfgang Schulz (26 February 1946 – 28 March 2013) was an Austrian concert flutist and teacher. He served as the principal flutist of the Vienna Philharmonic and was a professor at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He grew up in Linz and began flute lessons in 1956. He studied with Rudolf Leitner in Linz and later with Hans Reznicek in Vienna. In 1964 he won an audition at the Vienna Volksoper and played there as principal flutist until 1970. He joined the Vienna Volksoper in 1970 and became a member of the Vienna Philharmonic in 1973. In 1979 he started teaching flute at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. He founded Ensemble Wien-Berlin in 1983, a woodwind quintet of players from the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics, and remained with it for life. In 1996 he began his own festival, Bonheur musical, in Lourmarin, France. In 2000 he formed the Camerata Schulz, a flexible music ensemble. His son Matthias Schulz, also a flutist, has played with him and since 2005 has been with the Vienna State Opera Stage Orchestra. Schulz passed away in 2013 in Vienna at the age of 67.
