Lucy Pearl
Lucy Pearl was an American R&B supergroup formed in 1999. It brought together Raphael Saadiq (from Tony! Toni! Toné!), Dawn Robinson (from En Vogue), and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (from A Tribe Called Quest). Saadiq had left Tony! Toni! Toné! in 1998 and suggested starting a new group with Muhammad and Robinson; they agreed. They originally planned to include D’Angelo, but he dropped out because of scheduling, so Dawn Robinson joined.
In May 2000, they released a self-titled album on Beyond Music. The lead single “Dance Tonight” made the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 and top 5 of the R&B chart, and it was nominated for a Grammy. The album went gold in August 2000. Their second single “Don’t Mess with My Man” found chart success outside the United States. In October 2000, Robinson left the group and Joi joined in November. They released the video for “Without You” and then the final single “You” before disbanding in late 2001.
Saadiq and Robinson occasionally perform Lucy Pearl songs in their solo sets. A 2009 reunion attempt failed after a lawsuit from Muhammad against Saadiq, and Robinson declined, saying she had felt misled about the 1999 album release. In 2020, Robinson said the group was meant to be one album and that she later learned she had been replaced.
