Fuglen
Fuglen (The Bird) is a Norwegian chain of coffee and cocktail bars with 11 locations as of 2026, in Norway, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia. It features a retro design inspired by Norwegian homes from the 1950s and 60s, and much of the interior is for sale so the look can change over time.
The first cafe opened in Oslo in 1963 as Kaffefuglen. After new ownership in 2008 the name changed to Fuglen. In 2010 the company added a cocktail bar and a vintage shop.
The first Tokyo location opened in Shibuya in 2012, and a coffee roastery followed in Tokyo in 2014 because it was hard to ship coffee from Oslo. A second Oslo location with a roastery opened in Gamlebyen in 2018.
In 2024 two more locations opened in Seoul and Jakarta. Plans for New York in 2013 never materialized; expansion to the US has been challenging. Fuglen prefers slow, steady growth and aims to own its brand and operate all locations itself, rather than franchising.
In 2014 Japanese artist Takashi Murakami collaborated with Fuglen to create Bar Zingaro in Nakano Broadway. In 2023–2024, Byens Tak and Byens Gulv opened in the Folketeateret building at Youngstorget, in collaboration with Rodeo Architects.
