William I Sanudo (Guglielmo) died around 1323. He was the fourth Duke of the Archipelago, ruling from 1303 until his death. He was the son of Marco II, whom he succeeded. In his youth he fought in the War of the Ass against the Ghisi. His father had recently regained some lands and left him a unified duchy to rule. William’s sons included Nicholas, who became his successor and was one of the few knights to escape the Battle of Halmyros in 1311; John I; and Marco Sanudo, Lord of Milos.
