Whitehouse Block
The Whitehouse Block is a historic three-story brick building at 188 Water Street in downtown Augusta, Maine. Built in 1865 after a devastating fire, it is the southernmost of four Italianate blocks that line Water Street. The building was designed by Francis H. Fassett for dry goods merchant O. C. Whitehouse, who used the second floor for his store, while the first floor housed the Augusta Savings Bank and the U.S. Pension Agency, and the third floor was used by fraternal societies. It features a projecting cornice with decorative details, quoined corners, and a storefront with a recessed entry. The second-floor windows have rounded hoods and bracketed sills, and the third-floor windows have more elaborate hoods. The Whitehouse Block remains in commercial use and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986.
