Barneys New York is an American luxury fashion brand that started as a small discount store in New York City in 1923, founded by Barney Pressman. It grew into a famous shopping destination known for high-end designers and house brands, helping to bring names like Armani to the American market.

Over the years, Barneys expanded beyond its original store and became a landmark luxury retailer with flagship locations and first-time U.S. appearances for many designers. The company faced financial trouble in the 1990s and again in 2019, leading to bankruptcy and store closures.

In 2019, Authentic Brands Group (ABG) bought Barneys’ intellectual property and soon began licensing the name to Saks Fifth Avenue for Barneys-branded spaces inside Saks stores. Since 2021, Barneys brands have operated in Saks Fifth Avenue stores in New York and Greenwich, Connecticut. Barneys has also continued international efforts, with a presence in Japan and partnerships involving Laox Holdings, as well as a beauty line licensed to Gloent Group in South Korea.

In 2024, Barneys joined Authentic Luxury Group, a collaboration between ABG and Saks Global. A Barneys-branded project opened as Barneys New York Residences in Tulum, Mexico, and ABG has pursued other brand extensions and store formats.

As of 2026, Barneys operates primarily in Japan (six full-line stores and four outlets) and maintains two Barneys-within-Saks locations in the United States. A Barneys beauty and fragrance shop also operates in South Korea, with additional Barneys counters in department stores in the U.S. and Japan.
