Yamaguchi Line
Yamaguchi Line (山口線, Yamaguchi-sen) is a rural railway line in western Japan operated by JR West. It runs from Shin-Yamaguchi Station in Shin-Yamaguchi, Yamaguchi Prefecture, to Masuda Station in Masuda, Shimane Prefecture, covering 93.9 km with 28 stations.
Line details: The line is single-tracked, non-electrified, and uses 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) gauge. The maximum speed is 85 km/h.
History: The Shin-Yamaguchi–Yamaguchi section opened on 20 February 1913, and the line was extended north to Masuda by 1923. CTC signalling was introduced in 1984.
Operations: The line carries regional rail services. JR West operates most trains; JR Freight also uses the line. An all-stations local service runs with two KiHa 40 DMU cars (in service from 2009). The Super Oki limited express uses the Yamaguchi Line to connect Shin-Yamaguchi with Yonago and Tottori on the Sanin Main Line. The line is famous for the SL Yamaguchi steam train.
