The Maine (Des Moines, Iowa)
The Maine is a historic three-story brick apartment building in Des Moines, Iowa. Completed in 1913, it has 18 units arranged in an H-shaped layout. The building features long rows of windows, stone lintels, and decorative stone trim. At the rear is a two-story brick garage that shares the historic designation with the apartment building; the garage’s exact construction date is not clear.
The Maine sits on Sixth Avenue, a busy transportation route in the early 20th century that included streetcars and cars. This location helped drive the move to more dense, apartment-style housing in the area.
