Western Collegiate Hockey League
The Western Collegiate Hockey League (WCHL) is a Division I league in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), the top non-varsity level of college hockey in the United States. It was founded in 2012 and is based in the Western United States. The league began play in the 2013–14 season with six teams.
The WCHL grew over the years. In its first two seasons, teams won the national championship: Arizona State in 2013–14 and Central Oklahoma in 2014–15. Arizona State left the league in 2015 to form an NCAA Division I program, and Arkansas and Missouri State joined the WCHL that year. Central Oklahoma added another national title in 2017. Arkansas left after the 2018–19 season.
In September 2019, the league expanded to ten teams with the additions of the University of Utah, UNLV, and Grand Canyon University for the 2020–21 season. Beginning with 2020–21, the WCHL was divided into two geographic divisions for conference play, with each team playing a total of 20 conference games (home-and-home within its division and a mix of games against the other division).
The WCHL remains a competitive league that develops players at the ACHA D-1 level.
