Song district
Song (Thai: สอง) is the northernmost district of Phrae province in northern Thailand. It covers about 1,625 square kilometers and had about 53,700 people in 2005. The area is mountainous, part of the Phi Pan Nam Range, and Mae Yom National Park lies there.
Neighbors (from the southeast, clockwise): Rong Kwang and Nong Muang Khai (Phrae), Mae Mo and Ngao (Lampang), Dok Kham Tai and Chiang Muan (Phayao), Ban Luang and Wiang Sa (Nan).
History: The district was originally named Mueang Song, renamed Ban Klang in 1917 after the central tambon, and restored to Song in 1939 as Song (dropping “mueang”).
Administration: Song has eight tambons (sub-districts) and 84 villages. It has a thesaban tambon (sub-district municipality) covering parts of Ban Nun and Ban Klang, plus eight TAOs (tambon administrative organizations).
Highlights: Phra That Phra Lo chedi in Ban Klang is linked to the Thai folk tale Lilit Phra Lo. Living River Siam studied local life here due to a possible Kaeng Sua Ten dam project.
