West Hampstead tube station
West Hampstead is a London Underground station in West Hampstead, north-west London. It sits on West End Lane between Broadhurst Gardens and Blackburn Road, in fare zone 2. The station is on the Jubilee line, between Kilburn and Finchley Road.
Nearby stations include West Hampstead Overground (about 100 metres away) on the Mildmay line and West Hampstead Thameslink (about 200 metres away). Metropolitan line trains pass through the station but do not stop.
History (in brief):
- Opened on 30 June 1879 by the Metropolitan Railway.
- It had two tracks with side platforms at first; later an island platform was added.
- On 20 November 1939 most stopping services moved to the Bakerloo line.
- Stopping services moved to the Jubilee line on 1 May 1979.
- Metropolitan line trains still run on nearby tracks but rarely stop.
Accessibility and plans:
- The station is not currently step-free; stairs connect the ticket hall to the platform.
- Nearby Thameslink and Overground stations have step-free access from upgrades in 2011 and 2019.
- In 2023, £10 million was allocated to help fund future step-free access at West Hampstead Underground if funding allows.
- A 2025 redevelopment nearby could help expand the station and improve access.
