Post Office Squirrel savings account
Post Office Squirrel savings account was a New Zealand savings scheme run by the New Zealand Post Office to help children save money. It is no longer active. It grew out of the School Savings Bank scheme started in 1934 to encourage kids to save regularly and to continue saving after leaving school. The squirrel mascot and the slogan "be squirrel wise" were in use by the mid-1950s. At first, children bought small-denomination stamps from their teacher, which were exchanged for a deposit in the child's account. Later, children could bring cash to school to deposit. Banking day was held once a week at school, with parent helpers running the scheme.
