Way Down in the Rust Bucket
Way Down in the Rust Bucket is a live album and concert film by Neil Young and Crazy Horse. It was released on February 26, 2021 and was recorded on November 13, 1990 at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, California, as the band warmed up for the Ragged Glory tour.
The show features three sets and an encore, mostly playing Ragged Glory material along with older favorites and deeper cuts. Guitarist Poncho Sampedro later said it’s the best Crazy Horse record they ever made, praising Neil Young’s electrifying performance and the band’s playing. Highlights include early versions of songs like Country Home, Cortez the Killer, Danger Bird, Over and Over, and Homegrown, capturing a lively, early-era feel.
During the show, a power loss damaged the multitrack recording of Cowgirl in the Sand, so that track was removed from the CD and LP editions (it still appears on the DVD with some audio dropouts). This allowed the release to fit on two CDs or four LPs.
The album was announced on January 1, 2020 and was originally planned for release that year alongside Greendale Live (retitled Return to Greendale). It finally came out February 26, 2021 and is part of the Neil Young Archives Performance Series as Volume 11.5.
Three singles were issued ahead of the release: Country Home and Don’t Cry No Tears on February 16, 2021, and Homegrown on February 19, 2021.
All songs are written by Neil Young, except where noted. The album runs about 142 minutes and is categorized as hard rock, produced by Neil Young and David Briggs for Reprise Records. Critics gave it strong praise, reflected in a high Metacritic score.
