List of California county high points
California has 58 counties, and each county has a highest point.
Six of the United States’ 50 highest county high points are in California. The state’s tallest point is Mount Whitney, located on the border of Inyo and Tulare counties, at 14,505 feet (4,421 meters). It is both California’s highest point and the highest point in the contiguous United States.
California’s wide range of mountains attracts people who like to reach county high points. As of May 2024, at least 45 climbers have completed summiting all 58 of California’s county high points.
Some high points lie on private or protected land where climbing is typically not allowed, such as Laveaga Peak and South Butte. Some climbers have obtained permission from landowners for group hikes, while others have reportedly trespassed after dark. Peakbagger.com and similar sites discourage trespassing, though trip reports sometimes mention it.
