Overview
The 1983–84 Ranji Trophy was the 50th season of India’s premier domestic cricket competition. 24 teams took part. Mumbai, also called Bombay, won the title for the 29th time. They beat Delhi in the final on the basis of a first-innings lead, helped by a double century from Sunil Gavaskar.

Highlights
- Dilip Vengsarkar of Bombay scored hundreds in the quarter-final, semi-final, and final.
- Kiran More of Baroda hit 181 not out in the quarter-final against Uttar Pradesh and added a Ranji trophy record 145 for the last wicket with Vasudev Patel.
- Rajinder Goel of Haryana took 5/7 and 5/18 in Haryana’s win over Jammu and Kashmir.

Group stage
Teams were divided into five zones. The leading teams in each zone were:
- Central Zone: Uttar Pradesh topped with 70 points; Rajasthan 49, Vidarbha 43, Railways 38, Madhya Pradesh 30.
- South Zone: Tamil Nadu led with 93 points; Hyderabad 79, Karnataka 73, Andhra 54, Kerala 16.
- West Zone: Bombay led with 100 points; Baroda 42, Gujarat 40, Saurashtra 36, Maharashtra 34.
- North Zone: Haryana 94, Delhi 90, Punjab 44, Services 27, Jammu and Kashmir 17.
- East Zone: Bengal 50, Orissa 43, Bihar 42, Assam 6.

Knockout stage and final
The season progressed through knockout rounds, culminating in a final between Bombay and Delhi. The final was played from 30 March to 3 April 1984 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. Bombay won on first-innings lead:
- Bombay first innings: 625 ( Sunil Gavaskar 206, Dilip Vengsarkar 123)
- Delhi: 333
- Bombay second innings: 245
- Delhi: 266/4
Bombay won the title on the basis of their first-innings advantage.
