Wan Zhexian
Wan Zhexian (1927–2023) was a Chinese mathematician and an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was born on November 7, 7, 1927, in Zichuan, Shandong, and his ancestral home was Xiantao, Hubei. He studied at Zhangdian Primary School and joined the Mathematics Department of National Southwest Associated University in 1944. He graduated from Tsinghua University in 1948 and later taught there. In 1950 he moved to the Institute of Systems Science, CAS, where he held roles from assistant to researcher. That year, he began studying classical groups under Hua Luogeng and, with Hua, co-authored the book Classical Group in 1963. Wan joined the China Association for Promoting Democracy in 1953 and the Chinese Communist Party in 1985. He died on May 30, 2023, in Beijing, at the age of 95.
