Chun Tao is a 1988 Chinese drama directed by Ling Zifeng and based on Xu Dishan’s story Chun Tao. Set in old Beijing during the 1930s, it follows Chun Tao, a young woman whose wedding night is disrupted when bandits separate her from her fiancé Li Mao. She escapes to Beijing with Liu Xianggao and ends up trying to survive with Li Mao and Xianggao in a small, crowded life.

Li Mao is disabled, and the three of them form a complicated living situation as they navigate love, loyalty, and hardship. A turning point comes when Li Mao’s fate and their relationships force Chun Tao to choose how to live. After a series of painful events, Xianggao returns, and Li Mao finds happiness in the renewed bond among them, while Chun Tao asserts her independence and integrity.

The film uses the old Beijing setting to explore big changes in Chinese society. It probes the tension between traditional values and modern ideas, especially through Chun Tao’s decisions. The story presents a strong, determined woman who takes control of her life in a time when such female agency was just beginning to be shown on screen. The performances, particularly Liu Xiaoqing as Chun Tao, are noted for bringing depth to a character who embodies both resilience and vulnerability. Chun Tao is remembered for its bold moments and its fresh look at gender roles in 1980s Chinese cinema.
