896th Helicopter Reconnaissance and Liaison Squadron

The 896th was a Yugoslav Air Force unit formed in 1981 at Batajnica as the 896th Helicopter Flight to help the 1st Army with reconnaissance and liaison duties, flying domestically built Soko SA 341 Gazelle helicopters. On March 1, 1985, it was redesignated the 896th Helicopter Reconnaissance and Liaison Squadron. In 1988, during a reorganization of field armies, the squadron gained an extra flight at Rajlovci airport (the site of the former 892nd Squadron). The squadron took part in early combat operations in the Croatian War of Independence and the Bosnian War (1991–1992). It was disbanded in 1992, with its personnel and equipment transferred to the 890th Transport Helicopter Squadron. The Rajlovci unit joined the Republika Srpska Air Force and merged into its 711th Anti-Armored Helicopter Squadron.
