Voyage on a Dinner Table
Voyage on a Dinner Table is a 60-minute Australian radio drama from 1954, written by Shan Benson and directed by Henry Cuthbertson for ABC. The story imagines a 1772 dinner in London between Captain James Cook and the famous musician Dr. Burney. Cook draws the route of his voyage to New South Wales on a book open on the table, and the drama moves between the dinner conversation and Cook’s memories of his great voyage. The play contrasts Burney’s dreamy, refined persona with Cook’s sturdy, practical sea captain, and asks how such a brilliant navigator could also be so straightforward in daily life. Benson uses various verse forms to paint vivid scenes.
The piece was well received and was repeated several times. Critics highlighted the sharp exchanges between Cook and Sir Joseph Banks as a standout moment, while noting that the dinner-table conversation with Burney leaves room for further exploration. Voyage on a Dinner Table was later published in the 1959 anthology Plays for Radio and Television, edited by Nigel Samuel.
