Ulanhot is a county-level city and the administrative center of Hinggan League in eastern Inner Mongolia, China. It covers about 772 square kilometers, with around 86 square kilometers of urban area. In 2020, the city had about 356,000 people, with about 266,000 living in the urban area.

History
It was once known as Wangin Süm and was Inner Mongolia’s first capital, from May 1, 1947, to December 1949. The regional capital later moved to Zhangjiakou and then to Hohhot, where it remains today.

Transportation
Ulanhot is connected by the Baicheng–Arxan railway to Baicheng in Jilin Province. National Highway 302 runs from Tumen to Ulanhot. The city is served by Ulanhot Yilelite Airport (IATA: HLH, ICAO: ZBUL). Air China and Hainan Airlines operate flights to Beijing and Hohhot.

Nearby landmarks
Just outside the city are a Yuan dynasty tomb and a temple dedicated to Genghis Khan, built in 1940 and expanded in 2002.

The city is divided into 10 subdistricts and 4 towns.

Climate
Ulanhot has a monsoon-influenced humid continental climate with long, cold, dry winters and warm summers. January average is about -15°C, July about 23°C, and the annual average around 5°C. Most rain falls from May to August.
