Trivium (band)
Trivium is an American heavy metal band from Orlando, Florida. The group formed in 1999 and centers on Matt Heafy (vocals and guitar), Corey Beaulieu (guitar) and Paolo Gregoletto (bass). They’ve had several drummers over the years, with the current lineup featuring Heafy, Beaulieu, Gregoletto and a rotating drum line.
Musically, Trivium blends metalcore, thrash metal, melodic death metal and progressive metal. They’re known for heavy riffs, fast guitar work and both screaming and clean singing. Their sound has evolved a lot across albums, from aggressive early styles to more melodic and thrash-influenced approaches later on.
Their first album, Ember to Inferno, came out in the early 2000s on Lifeforce Records. After catching the attention of Roadrunner Records, they released Ascendancy in 2005, which became a breakthrough and helped them reach a wider audience. The band’s subsequent records continued to push their sound in new directions.
The Crusade (2006) saw a shift in vocal style and a heavier thrash influence, while Shogun (2008) added Japanese-inspired themes and even bigger production. In Waves (2011) brought a return to tighter, more direct songs, followed by Vengeance Falls (2013) produced with David Draiman. Silence in the Snow (2015) stood out for its absence of harsh vocals, reflecting a more streamlined approach. The Sin and the Sentence (2017) and What the Dead Men Say (2020) kept their momentum with aggressive riffs and modern production, and In the Court of the Dragon (2021) continued their ambitious blend of styles.
In recent years, the band has kept touring and recording while making lineup changes behind the drums. They released the Struck Dead EP in 2025 and have talked about new material for a future album.
Trivium has earned several major awards and nominations. They won Kerrang! Awards for Best International Newcomer (2005) and have been nominated for other Kerrang! honors and a Grammy nomination for the song Betrayer in 2019. Over the years, they’ve built a reputation as one of the key modern metal bands, known for energetic live shows and constant musical growth.
