Thunder Road Stakes
Thunder Road Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for four-year-olds and older. It takes place each January at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. The race is run on turf, over one mile (eight furlongs) on a left-handed track. Horses carry 124 pounds with allowances, and the purse is $100,000 (since 2014).
The event began in 2004 as a handicap. The first winner was Singletary, ridden by Victor Espinoza, in a time of 1:34.42. It was upgraded to Grade III in 2009, and that year the race was moved to the main synthetic track due to weather. The Thunder Road Stakes was not run in 2010 or 2012. It was downgraded to Listed status for 2013–2015, then upgraded back to Grade III in 2016. Today it is run under allowance weight conditions with a $100,000 purse.
