An injury to one is an injury to all
“An injury to one is an injury to all” is a motto of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW). Bill Haywood, in his autobiography, said David C. Coates suggested the slogan for the IWW. The phrase reflects the IWW’s idea of a single, united union that includes many kinds of workers. Since the IWW adopted it, the motto has been used by other labor groups and appears on protest signs. The expression is similar to, and may come from, a Knights of Labor slogan from about 25 years earlier: “That is the best government in which an injury to one is the concern of all.”
