Behsud, Maidan Wardak
Behsud is a town in central Afghanistan, in Maidan Wardak province. It is the administrative center of Markazi Behsud District. About 4,600 people live there. Behsud sits high in the central highlands, at about 2,981 meters (9,780 feet) above sea level, and the area has long, very cold winters.
Most residents are Hazara, with some Kochis (Pashtun nomads). The region has a history of conflict between Hazaras and Kuchis, dating back to the late 1800s and continuing into recent decades. In Maidan Wardak, clashes and displacement have occurred, including reports that more than 1,800 households were forced to leave in May 2010.
In April 2022, a 20-member Mediation Council was established in Behsud to address Hazara-Kuchi disputes in Maidan Wardak. The council is led by Syed Hashim Jawadi Balkhabi and directed by Governor Mohammad Amin Omar. The goal is to find lasting solutions, but tensions and periodic confrontations during Kuchi migrations have continued, and detailed reports about Behsud since 2022 are limited.
