Thelonious Martin
Malcolm Martin, known as Thelonious Martin or King Thelonious, is an American hip hop producer from Chicago. He was born on September 19, 1992, in Chicago, and his mother moved them to New Jersey soon after. He later returned to Chicago and joined the Savemoney collective led by Vic Mensa.
Martin’s love for music started at 14 after hearing J Dilla on Adult Swim, which also turned him on to Madlib. He finished Montclair High School and then moved back to Chicago to focus on making music with Savemoney.
He began producing for Savemoney members in 2011. In 2012, he produced Hodgy Beats’s tracks “Ave.” and “If Heaven is a Ghetto” for the Untitled EP. That year, he appeared on the Pro Era mixtape PEEP: The Aprocalypse, producing “K.I.N.G.S.” by Joey Bada$$ and Capital STEEZ, and he worked with the Odd Future group MellowHigh on the single “Go.” In 2013, he started working with Curren$y on New Jet City and also produced for Action Bronson and Da$h on V.I.C.E.S. as well as for Retch on Polo Sporting Goods.
In 2014, Martin produced half of Curren$y’s The Drive In Theatre and Smoke DZA’s “Ghost of Dipset” on Dream.ZONE.Achieve. He released the promotional single “Her” with Mac Miller and followed with “Atlantis,” featuring Curren$y and Domo Genesis, along with news about his upcoming album. On December 2, 2014, he released his debut album Wünderkid, fully produced by himself and featuring guests such as Curren$y, Domo Genesis, Retch, Mac Miller, Ab-Soul, and Smoke DZA. His song “September” was also featured on Adult Swim, and he produced “Back Home” for A$AP Rocky’s At.Long.Last.A$AP.
In 2015, Martin began collaborating with Theo Martins. Their work included the track “Show Me Around” and plans for a full project. They released “Bad Tendencies” in 2016 and announced a collaborative EP. Martin cites influences from Madlib, MF DOOM, J Dilla, Flying Lotus, The Alchemist, Pete Rock, and Just Blaze.
