Alvaro Salas
Alvaro Salas Gularte (born May 25, 1953) is a Uruguayan master candombe drummer and percussion teacher from Montevideo. He was born in the Ansina neighborhood of Montevideo, Uruguay. Salas specializes in candombe, Latin jazz, and world music and plays tamboriles and various drums such as timbales, bongos, congas, and other percussion.
Throughout his career, Salas has performed and recorded with musicians like Eduardo Mateo, Jorginho Gularte, Roberto Galletti, Federico Britos, and Urbano Moraes. He has also worked as a percussionist, arranger, and director for several award-winning Carnival groups, including Marabunta, Sueno del Buceo, and Vendaval.
He is the Director of Mundo Afro, an Afro-Uruguayan social organization, and runs its music school, which has international recognition.
In 2018, he collaborated with Kamba Kuá to celebrate Afro-Paraguayan identity at the Agustin Pio Barrios music school at the Municipal Art Institute (IMA).
Salas teaches how the candombe drum family works, including the piano, chico, and repique drums.
