Merck Mercuriadis is a British-Canadian music industry executive, artist manager, and entrepreneur born on October 2, 1963, in Schefferville, Quebec, Canada. He is the founder and chairman of Hipgnosis Song Management, the founder of Hipgnosis Songs Fund, and the founder of Hipgnosis Songs Capital (in partnership with Blackstone).

Mercuriadis grew up in Middleton, Nova Scotia, and by age 12 was inspired to work in music after seeing Kiss in Halifax. At 19, he landed a marketing director role at Virgin Records Canada after reaching out to the label, later moving to the UK to expand into A&R. He worked on projects with artists like UB40, The Human League, XTC, and helped sign Mary Margaret O’Hara. He left Virgin after the Miss America album was released.

In 1986 he joined Sanctuary Music (Overseas) Limited, led by Rod Smallwood and Andy Taylor, and helped grow the company into Sanctuary Artist Management, Sanctuary Records, Rough Trade Records, Bravado Merchandise, and more. He moved to New York in 2000 to build Sanctuary North America and relaunched Rough Trade Records in 2001. He served as CEO of Sanctuary Group North America and later led the entire Sanctuary Group before resigning in 2006. During his time at Sanctuary, he managed major acts including Destiny’s Child, Beyoncé, Nelly, The Who, Robert Plant, Megadeth, Kiss, Morrissey, and Iron Maiden, and he helped Morrissey achieve several successful albums.

Mercuriadis later founded Hipgnosis Songs Fund Limited, Hipgnosis Song Management, and Hipgnosis Songs Capital (with Blackstone). He has stated that hit songs have real, investable value comparable to gold or oil, and that managers should help artists realize their vision. Hipgnosis began raising funds to buy song catalogs and, in 2018, listed on the London Stock Exchange as SONG after raising more than $300 million. Its first acquisition was The-Dream’s 302-song catalog, which includes hits like Justin Bieber’s “Baby,” Beyoncé’s “Single Ladies,” and Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” By the end of Hipgnosis’s first full year as a public company, it owned more than 5,000 songs, with about 2,000 having reached #1 somewhere and 4,000 reaching the Top 10.

In 2021 Blackstone partnered with Hipgnosis Song Management, backing an initial $1 billion in funds and taking an ownership stake. In 2022 Hipgnosis acquired 100% of Justin Timberlake’s catalog, 80% of Kenny Chesney’s catalog, and all 278 Leonard Cohen songs. By July 2022 Hipgnosis Song Fund owned about 65,000 songs with a fair value of roughly $2.7 billion. In January 2023, Hipgnosis acquired Justin Bieber’s entire back catalog (more than 290 songs).

Mercuriadis has been recognized with awards such as Variety 500 (2020–2022), Billboard Power 100 (2020–2023), an honorary professorship at the Royal Northern College of Music (2020), and Rolling Stone Future 25 (2020). He remains the CEO and founder of Hipgnosis Song Management, driving the growth of song catalogs and advocating for songwriters.
