The Scholars (album)
The Scholars is the thirteenth studio album by American indie rock band Car Seat Headrest, released on May 2, 2025 through Matador Records. The project marks a move toward a rock opera and concept album, built around eight characters at a fictional university called Parnassus University.
Background and creation
Work on The Scholars began in spring 2023 as frontman Will Toledo recovered from long COVID and histamine intolerance. After health improved, the band partnered more in writing, with other members contributing ideas. This is the first Car Seat Headrest album to credit the entire band as writers. Toledo acted mainly as an organizer, helping shape material that others created, and guitarist Ethan Ives contributed to sound design and co-wrote the track “Reality.” The album was self-produced by Toledo and largely recorded with analog equipment.
Concept and storytelling
The Scholars is presented as a rock opera. Each song is sung from the perspective of a character at the university, which centers on life, death, and rebirth. The lead track “Gethsemane” follows a character named Rosa, while “CCF (I’m Gonna Stay With You)” centers on Beolco, who believes he is the founder’s reincarnation and seeks confirmation. The songs together form a loose, narrative-driven experience inspired by Shakespeare, Mozart, classical opera, and albums like The Who’s Tommy and Bowie's Ziggy Stardust.
Promotion and release
Matador founder Chris Lombardi helped create a promotional game called a WebQuest to tease the album. It started Feb. 18, 2025, with puzzles themed around school subjects, gradually revealing snippets and the album art. The single “Gethsemane” premiered March 4, 2025, on BBC Radio 6 and was released with a black-and-white music video. The second single, “CCF (I’m Gonna Stay With You),” appeared April 2, followed by the final single, “The Catastrophe (Good Luck With That, Man),” on April 29. The Scholars was released May 2, 2025, with a deluxe version including Scholars: Early Hack, a disc of nineteen demos from the recording sessions.
Health break and touring
Toledo’s health challenges during 2022 briefly led the band to pause touring and consider disbanding. By spring 2023, health had improved enough to begin extended jam sessions, reintroducing live dynamics into the recording process and boosting collaboration. A planned tour ran from May 16 to November 1, 2025, with scheduling arranged to be mindful of Toledo’s health.
Reception and legacy
The Scholars received generally favorable reviews. Metacritic scored it 79/100 based on 13 critiques. Critics praised its ambition and scope, with some calling it the band’s best work in years and noting its bold, narrative approach. A few critics found parts of the album slow or overly long and questioned how much of the story is accessible without digging into the concept.
Track and credits
All songs are credited to Car Seat Headrest. The album was produced by Will Toledo and features band members contributing to writing and performance, reflecting a collaborative, analog-recording approach.
In short, The Scholars is a bold, storytelling-driven album that marks a collaborative shift for Car Seat Headrest, pairing rock opera ambitions with a deeply literary and musical approach.
