The Piltdown Men
The Piltdown Men were an American instrumental rock group from Hollywood. They had two lead saxophones and were created by Ed Cobb and Lincoln Mayorga of the Four Preps, with music released on Capitol Records. They named themselves after the Piltdown Man hoax.
In 1960, their song Brontosaurus Stomp reached No. 75 on the Billboard Hot 100, helped by The Flintstones starting on TV that year. They found more success in the United Kingdom, with hits beginning in 1960: McDonald's Cave (based on Old MacDonald Had a Farm), Piltdown Rides Again (based on the William Tell Overture), and Goodnight Mrs. Flintstone (based on Good Night Ladies by E. P. Christy).
They stopped releasing records after Night Surfin’ in 1962, produced by Nick Venet. A compilation LP called The Piltdown Men appeared in the Netherlands on Capitol in 1981 and has been reissued several times. A CD compilation, The Piltdown Men Ride Again, was released by Ace in 1998.
