Cyrtochiloides ochmatochila
Cyrtochiloides ochmatochila is an orchid species in the family Orchidaceae. It belongs to the genus Cyrtochiloides, a small group of neotropical epiphytic orchids created in 2001 by botanists N. H. Williams and M. W. Chase after DNA analysis showed these plants form a distinct lineage from other Oncidium orchids.
Taxonomy in simple terms: Kingdom Plantae; Clade Tracheophytes; Angiosperms; Monocots; Order Asparagales; Family Orchidaceae; Subfamily Epidendroideae; Genus Cyrtochiloides; Species ochmatochila. The binomial name is Cyrtochiloides ochmatochila. Older names you might see include Oncidium ochmatochilum.
DNA studies revealed that Oncidium ochmatochilum and several related species are only loosely connected to the main Oncidium group. Cyrtochiloides sits in a well-supported cluster with other genera such as Otoglossum, Cyrtochilum, the Andean Caucaea group, and Miltoniopsis, helping botanists understand their relationships better.
