The Kids in the Hall

The Kids in the Hall is a Canadian sketch comedy group formed in 1984 in Calgary and Toronto by five comedians: Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson. They are known for their quirky, surreal humor and memorable characters.

Their TV show, The Kids in the Hall, ran from 1989 to 1995. It started on CBC in Canada and HBO in the United States, and later aired on CBS for two seasons. The troupe released one film, Brain Candy, in 1996.

The group reunited for a North American tour in 2000 and later produced Death Comes to Town, an eight-episode miniseries that aired in 2010 on CBC in Canada and IFC in the United States. In 2022, they released an eight-episode revival on Amazon Prime Video, billed as the first Canadian Amazon Original series.

Origin of the name: it comes from Sid Caesar, who would call a failed joke “the kids in the hall.”

In addition to their shows, the members pursued other work, including voice acting and roles in films and TV. They have performed at festivals like Just for Laughs (2007) and SF Sketchfest (2008), and earned awards such as the Rose d’Or (1993) and Gemini Awards (1992, 1993). They were inducted onto Canada’s Walk of Fame in 2008 and received the Canadian Screen Awards Icon Award in 2019.
