Selvaraghavan
Selvaraghavan is an Indian filmmaker known for his bold Tamil films and a few Telugu projects. He was born on March 5, 1975, in Theni, Tamil Nadu. He comes from a film family: his father is director Kasthuri Raja and his brother is actor Dhanush. Selvaraghavan studied mechanical engineering and, though he earned a degree, he followed his passion for storytelling.
His directing career began with Thulluvadho Ilamai (2002), a coming‑of‑age film that became a sleeper hit. Although his father was credited as the director for distribution reasons, the project launched Selvaraghavan’s career. He followed with Kadhal Kondein (2003) and 7G Rainbow Colony (2004), both featuring Dhanush, which established his distinctive, intense style.
Selvaraghavan then took on more ambitious projects. Pudhupettai (2006) was a dark gangster drama, and he made the Telugu film Aadavari Matalaku Arthale Verule (2007), a lighter romantic drama. He also explored production, co‑founding White Elephants with Yuvan Shankar Raja and Arvind Krishna, while many of his other film projects faced delays or were shelved.
Two major films pushed his reach: the fantasy epic Aayirathil Oruvan (2010) and the science‑fiction Irandam Ulagam (2013). Both attempted grand scales and novel visuals, but received mixed reviews and were costly to produce. Mayakkam Enna (2011), about a young photographer, earned praise for its realistic feel and emotional depth.
In 2019, he released NGK, a political thriller starring Suriya, which received mixed responses. Nenjam Marappathillai (2021), a gothic horror, was well received by critics and audiences. In 2022, Selvaraghavan appeared as an actor in Beast, a Tamil action film starring Vijay, which performed well at the box office. He also acted in Saani Kaayidham and directed Naane Varuvean (2022) with his brother Dhanush in the lead.
Selvaraghavan is admired for trying different genres and for his distinctive storytelling. He often collaborates with composer Yuvan Shankar Raja and cinematographer Arvind Krishna, and he remains one of Tamil cinema’s most talked‑about directors.
