South Florida Regional Transportation Authority
South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA)
SFRTA is a public transit agency based in Pompano Beach, Florida. It operates Tri-Rail and serves the Miami metropolitan area across Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties.
The agency was created on July 1, 2003 by the Florida Legislature and the Florida Department of Transportation to replace the Tri-County Commuter Rail Authority and to strengthen cooperation with the county transit systems: Broward County Transit, Miami-Dade Transit, and Palm Tran. Tri-Rail is operated by SFRTA.
Mission: to coordinate and develop a regional transportation system in cooperation with government, private enterprise, and the community to move people, goods, and services.
The Tri-Rail system covers 81.64 miles of track and uses standard gauge (1,435 mm).
In 2011, the Federal Transit Administration awarded SFRTA $5.7 million under the TIGGER III program to fund sustainable stations, including solar panels at a station that would provide 100% of its energy, send excess power to the main grid, and store energy for nighttime use.
