The Excalibur Alternative is a 2002 science fiction novel by American author David Weber, published by Baen Books. It expands on David Drake’s Ranks of Bronze premise and is based on the short story "Sir George and the Dragon" (2001).

Plot in brief: A 14th‑century English army is abducted by aliens from the Galactic Federation to serve as mercenaries on worlds where only primitive weapons are allowed. The Federation bans advanced weapons on such worlds. A dragon‑like alien from the Guild explains the Federation’s history: it began 150,000 years ago with three races and a drive to control other civilizations’ tech, and now has 22 races on its council, invading new worlds to turn them into protectorates. A mutiny on the Guild ship, led by the Baron and the dragon, frees the English but prevents them from returning to Earth. The story then jumps to the 22nd century, where Earth is under a Solar government and the Federation threatens humanity. A much larger fleet arrives—the Avalon Empire, founded by the English and expanded through captured Guild technology—having prepared behind the scenes to intervene. They reveal themselves and offer an alliance to defeat the Federation, even though the Federation is vast. The English and Avalon have spent centuries quietly building power and now stand ready to challenge the Federation’s dominance.

Reception: Publishers Weekly praised Weber’s character work and knowledge of medieval warfare, but said the focus on action left subplots underdeveloped. The premise was noted to resemble Poul Anderson’s The High Crusade. Weber characterizes his approach as coming from a historian’s perspective and admits he “cheated” a little by moving historical England into a science‑fiction setting, letting Earth become a full sci‑fi world.
