Tam il Nadu Express is a daily superfast train of Indian Railways that runs between Chennai Central (MAS) and New Delhi (NDLS). The train numbers are 12621 from Chennai to Delhi and 12622 in the opposite direction. It covers about 2,182 km in around 32 hours, making it the fastest non‑AC train on this route. There is a long non‑stop section of about 431 km between Vijayawada and Chennai Central.
The train uses modern LHB coaches on broad gauge tracks and is hauled by a WAP‑7 locomotive from Royapuram for the entire journey, since the route is fully electrified. It offers several classes: AC First, AC 2‑Tier, AC 3‑Tier, AC 3‑Tier Economy, Sleeper, and General. It provides seating and sleeping berths, catering, large observation windows, and baggage space under seats. The average speed, including stops, is about 70 km/h.
Safety note: The Tamil Nadu Express has had accidents in the past; after major derailments its top speed was reduced. A notable crash occurred in 1981 at Asifabad Road, causing deaths and injuries.
