Strathmore F.C. (Dundee)
Strathmore Football Club, nicknamed the Strathie or the Stripes, was a Dundee-based Scottish football team. It was founded in 1876 (though the club later claimed an earlier date) and dissolved in 1894. The Strathie began playing at Magdalen Green, moved to Rollo’s Pier in 1882, spent the 1891–92 and 1892–93 seasons at Logie Park, and then moved to Carolina Port in 1893.
In the local game, Strathmore was one of the oldest and strongest clubs in Dundee by the mid-1880s, but never reached the top local level. In the Scottish Cup, they never got past the third round, often losing to the city’s bigger club, Our Boys. In the Forfarshire Cup, their best run came in 1887–88 when they reached the final but lost 10–2 to Arbroath. They also reached two finals in the Dundee Burns Club Charity Cup (1885–86 and 1889–90), losing heavily in both.
Strathmore were not admitted to the new Northern League when it formed in 1891–92, and their later attempts to join in 1892–93 and 1893–94 failed. In 1894, due to financial trouble and ground issues, Strathmore effectively merged with Johnstone Wanderers to form Dundonians. After some controversy over the Dundee name, the new club used the Wanderers’ name and continued play as Dundee Wanderers.
Throughout their history, Strathmore’s ground movements reflected the club’s changing fortunes, ending with Carolina Port before the 1894 merger.
